Since 1953 Junior Achievement has been helping young people in Silicon Valley realize how to create better lives for themselves and those around them. Junior Achievement's classroom economic education programs help young people in grades K-12 apply basic skills and think critically to solve complex problems. Junior Achievement has deep-rooted partnerships among business, community, and education; HP/Agilent has been involved in supporting JA from the beginning.
Current HP/Agilent volunteers experience the excitement of working and sharing information with young people that will lead them to successful futures. Mark Molau, IT Section Manager at HP in Mountain View and 10 year volunteer in JA's Economics program shares that "the students in my class like to learn what really goes on in the work world. Participating in JA gives me an appreciation for the experiences of today's youth. Knowing that I am making a contribution to the community and to what's happening outside of the work environment makes it all worthwhile"
How Can HP/Agilent Retirees Help?
Volunteer to be a JA classroom consultant
Visit the same class 5-10 times during regular school hours (each visit is 30-50 minutes long)
Lead JA activities during each visit to the class. Ready to use materials and lesson - plans are provided by JA; you add your expertise, experience and the fun!
Volunteers are especially needed in JA's Middle School and High School Programs
Elementary School Programs:
Set in the framework of a community children learn their roles as workers, consumers, and individuals living in a free enterprise system.
Middle Grades Programs:
Personal Economics-application of business and finance in personal life
Enterprise in Action-how every business starts and grows
High School Programs:
JA Economics-classic economic theory applied through computer simulations; volunteers add "real world" perspective
Success Skills-the soft skills of the workplace; building rapport and teamwork
