wwalleigh@jascc.orgOn Monday, September 23 at Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Jose, 140 golfers teed-up for Junior Achievement's 13th Annual Golf Classic, presented by FedEx Freight. Steve Troy of Aerofund Financial chaired his 11th successful event, helping to raise over $120,000 for Junior Achievement's classroom programs, which are available at no cost to schools. Special thanks goes to 30 volunteers-almost all from local Bank of America branches-for making the golfers' day relaxing and fun.
The tournament included barbeque lunch, the round of golf, dinner, awards and silent and oral auctions. Every golfer started out a winner with the entry gift of a golf bag travel cover. 1st prize for the lowest gross score went to the Pepsi team, lead by Joe Narcisso (also #1 in the Putting Contest!) with Joe Garcia, Tommy Mejia and Wally Hernandez. The lowest net score team was from PricewaterhouseCoopers: Jim Cigler, Ray Mack, Stephen Theard, and Karen Thom. The Guess-Your-Drive winner was David Barnard from the FedEx Freight team, who predicted his exact distance of 225 yards. And the longest men and women's drive was by Jeff Holbek and Jennifer Brown of Mentor Graphics.
Silent and oral auction winners are now planning their fun on the beach, skiing, golfing, wine tasting, attending sports events, using new sports equipment, and enjoying great food both in far-off locales or close to home. Trips included: Hawaii, Fort Lauderdale, New Orleans, Vail, Deer Valley, and Alpine Meadows. Get-aways include a cottage in Mendocino, Groveland Hotel near Yosemite, Silverado (with golf!), and a Carmel Valley golf weekend. Nights at the Fairmont Hotel, DeAnza and Hyatt St. Claire Hotels in San Jose, Ramada Inn Santa Cruz and Los Gatos Lodge will put winners in the lap of luxury--very close to home. Other winners will get "behind the scenes" views: meeting the KRON-TV 4 news anchors and view the newscast as it happens and special Wine Tours at Robert Mondavi, Mirassou and Savannah-Channel wineries. Gourmet dinners will be enjoyed from places like Le Papillon, the Napa Wine Train, Plumed Horse, Rose Pistola and The Black Cat. Sports fans are happy with game viewing from an Oakland A's luxury box (donated by KICU-TV 36). And golfers are in heaven with private golf lessons, gear and games at places like the Villages, Squaw Creek, Rdigemark, San Juan Oaks, Pruneridge and Saratoga Golf and Country Clubs.
Thank you to the many companies who helped make the day fun AND profitable for Silicon Valley and Monterey Bay students in Junior Achievement. In addition to FedEx Freight, major sponsors included Comerica Bank, Greater Bay Bancorp, Household, Ireland San Filippo LLP, Mentor Graphics, KICU-TV 36, Pepsi, The Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal, Southwest Airlines and U.S. Trust. There were about 40 Tee Sponsors, including Applied Materials, Bay Area Geotechnical Group, and Cupertino Electric-a veritable A,B,C of local companies. And golfers represented companies such as Bank of Santa Clara, Barry Swenson Builder, Hopkins Carley, and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
All the golfers and sponsors are winners for helping hundreds of students who will be able to participate in Junior Achievement classes as a result of the Golf Classic.
