Tony Ridder graduated from the University of Michigan in 1962.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. His early
newspaper career included both editorial and business-side posts
at the Aberdeen American News, Duluth News-Tribune,
Pasadena Star-News, Saint Paul Pioneer Press and The Detroit
News - all Knight Ridder papers.
In 1964, Mr. Ridder joined the San Jose Mercury News and was
serving as general manager when appointed publisher in 1977. For
nine years, he was president and publisher of the Mercury News
from where he moved to a corporate post in Miami, Florida -
president of the Newspaper Division. Then in 1989, he was
appointed president of Knight Ridder. In March 1995, he was
named CEO, and in July of the same year he was appointed
chairman. The corporate offices were moved to San Jose from
Miami in 1998.
Mr. Ridder serves on the board of the Seattle Times Company
and the Executive Committees and Board of the Associated Press.
He is chairman of the Public Policy Committee and member of the
Board and Executive Committee of the Newspaper Association of
America. He is a member of the Florida Council of 100 and the
advisory board of the Center for Economic Policy Research at
Stanford University. At the University of Michigan, he serves on
the President's Advisory Group and on the Visiting Committee at
the School of Business Administration. He is a trustee for Florida
International University.
Ad Week, in 1991, voted Mr. Ridder the newspaper executive of the
