John A. Young was born in Nampa, Idaho and grew up in
Klamath Falls, Oregon where he met his wife Rosemary. They are
the parents of three grown children. He holds a bachelor's degree in
electrical engineering from Oregon State University and has an MBA
from Stanford University. He also holds honorary degrees from
Oregon State, College of Idaho, Purdue University and the University
of Idaho.

Mr. Young joined Hewlett-Packard Company in 1958 after receiving
his master's degree. He was one of the few new hires who did not
want to work as an engineer. He was more interested the business
side of things. His career path at HP was a continuum of successes.
After a variety of sales and marketing positions, he was named
general manager of the Microwave Division in 1963.

By 1974 Mr. Young had so impressed his superiors that he was
appointed an executive vice president and elected to the company's
board of directors. Then in 1977 he was named President and Chief
Operating Officer. One year later he was named President and Chief
Executive Officer. In 1983 he became Chairman of the Executive
Committee. Mr. Young retired from Hewlett-Packard in 1992.

Over the years, Mr. Young has managed a rare balance in his life.
According to a close friend, he has successfully balanced his family,
work, community service and government service. He has been
Chairman of the President's Commission on Industrial
Competitiveness, a member of Stanford's Board of Trustees and
Chairman of the National Junior Achievement organization.

Recognition of his wide ranging accomplishments have included the
following; leadership award from the U.S. Council for International
Business, the Excellence in Communication Leadership Award, the
American Electronics Association's Medal of Achievement, and the
Prime Minister of Japan's Trade Award.
