Bill Krause

2006 Laureate, Bill Krause was born in Philadelphia, went to kindergarten in Japan and graduated from high school in Germany. But after living in 17 different places around the world, he came to Silicon Valley in 1967 and has called it home ever since. He has been chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Caspian Networks Inc. since 2002. In addition, Mr. Krause has been president of LWK Ventures, a private investment firm since 1993. Previously, Mr. Krause served as chairman and CEO of Exodus Communications Inc. and was president and CEO of Storm Technology Inc. Prior to that, Mr. Krause was president, CEO and chairman of the board of 3Com Corp. His Silicon Valley adventure started with 14 years at Hewlett-Packard Co. in various marketing and general management assignments. His last position at HP was as general manager of the General Systems Division. Currently Mr. Krause serves as a board director of Packeteer Inc., Pinnacle Systems Inc., and Sybase Inc. Mr. Krause together with his wife, Gay, established the Krause Foundation in 1995 with the mission to provide grants to organizations creating systemic change in education or youth development. Since inception the Krause Foundation has awarded or made commitments to award over $5M in grants and donations while continuing to grow its assets available for future grants. One of the grants has been in support of the Krause Center for Innovation at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. In addition, Mr. Krause was elected to serve as Chairman of the American Electronics Association in 1989. He was elected to the Junior Achievement Silicon Valley Business Hall of Fame in 2004. He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from The Citadel in 1963 and received an honorary doctorate of science in 2000. The Krauses live in Los Altos Hills.
