Lewis E. Platt was born in 1941, in Johnson City, New York. He
holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell
University and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business,
University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Platt joined Hewlett-Packard in 1966 and held various
management positions in the company's medical products operations
prior to becoming general manager of the Waltham, Massachusetts
Division in 1974. He was general manager of HP's Analytical Group
from 1980 to 1984 and was elected vice president in 1983. From
1984 until 1988 he managed various parts of the company's
computer business.

In 1987, Mr. Platt was elected executive vice president. In 1988, he
was named to oversee the Computer Products Sector and in 1990,
he was named head of the Computer Systems Organization.

He was elected president and chief executive officer and a member
of the board of directors in 1992. The board elected Mr. Platt to
succeed David Packard as chairman when he announced his
retirement in 1993.

President Clinton, in 1995, appointed Mr. Platt to the Advisory
Committee on Trade Policy Negotiations and is serving as chairman
of one of its three task forces, the World Trade Organization Task
Force.

In 1996, he was elected co-chair and a member of the board of
directors of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network. Mr. Platt's co-
chair is San Jose Mayor Susan Hammer.

Mr. Platt is a member of The Business Council and The Business
Roundtable. He also serves on the Cornell University Council and the
Wharton School Board of Overseers. He was a director of Molex
and Pacific Telesis.
