Lillian T. Silberstein is a graduate of San Jose State University with a
Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Her early career was in elementary
education. She became Executive Director of Silicon Valley Region
of The National Conference of Christians and Jews in 1970. The
name recently became The National Conference for Community and
Justice. She has led the organization from a staff of one to a staff of
42 with over 100 active volunteers and a Board of Governors 60
members strong. The NCCJ provides unique educational
opportunities in human relations for the people of this area.
Having lost her mother's entire family to the Holocaust, Ms.
Silberstein was compelled by an organization that promised
intergroup reconciliation. Its work became her mission. Founded in
1927, NCCJ is a human relations organization dedicated to fighting
bias, bigotry and racism. She is responsible for developing such
programs as Camp Anytown, U.S.A., Green Circle, Diversity
Workshops, Holocaust Studies and Critical Thinking, that reach
thousands of students each year. The County's Victim Witness
Assistance Center, serves thousands of crime victims annually.
Over the years, Ms. Silberstein has earned numerous honors for her
dedicated service: Honorary Doctorate, Santa Clara University;
Distinguished Achievement Citation, County Bar Association; Legacy
Medal of Honor, San Jose Medical Center; Whitney Young Award,
The Urban League; Baha`i Community Service Award; and the
Antioch Baptist Church Outstanding Service Award.
Ms. Silberstein is married to Hal. They have three children and three
grandchildren. |
