Charles Toeniskoetter

CEO and Chairman of Toeniskoetter & Breeding, Inc.

Inducted 2005

2005 Laureate, Charles Toeniskoetter, better known as Chuck, brings his passion and intensity to everything he does - family, business, and community. As a young boy, born and reared in St. Louis, Missouri, Chuck excelled at academics, sports, and Boy Scouting. He earned a Navy R.O.T.C. scholarship to Notre Dame University, where he played rugby and lead the Navy drill team. Fellow student, Linda Osborn, became Chuck's wife after they graduated from Notre Dame in 1967, then together they faced the worry of his serving in Viet Nam for 2 of his 4 years in the Marine Corp. Following his honored military service, Chuck attained his M.B.A. in 1973 from Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Then Chuck moved on to his next chapter: business and family. After two years in management consulting at McKinsey & Company, Chuck embarked on what became his life-long career in construction and development. In 1975, Chuck Toeniskoetter joined Carl N. Swenson Co. as a Vice President, where over the next 7 years, he started and managed the division responsible for all real estate development, architecture, and contract negotiation. And during this time, he and Linda started a family which today includes Erin (34), Leah (27), Megan (24) and Adam (22)

In 1983, Chuck Toeniskoetter and Dan Breeding made a leap of faith by forming a new partnership, Toeniskoetter & Breeding, Inc. (TBI), which, as we all know, endures as a major South Bay success story. Over 20 years, TBI has constructed over $800M in projects, developed more than 2.5 million square feet of buildings, managed over 2 million square feet of space and gained expertise in new, renovation, and restoration construction, including the 124-year old Santa Clara County Courthouse. TBI's building for the long-term applies to company management as well. While Chuck remains Chairman and CEO of TBI Development, early employees Tony Mirenda and Brad Krouskup are respective Presidents of TBI Construction & Construction Management and TBI Development.

And Chuck oversees a 3rd major TBI arm, Bear Valley family resort in the Sierra, with skiing and houses and in the near future condos, homes, resort hotel, and golf. Bear Valley has provided a wonderful escape for friends and family, and lots of good memories have formed on its slopes and meadows. Another escape for Chuck personally has been his Harley, and participating in related motorcycle activities.

Several years ago, Chuck suffered a stroke and due to excellent, correct care, made a total recovery. As a result, Chuck Toeniskoetter's passion has been the Stroke Awareness Foundation, which he co-founded to advocate and certify hospital Stroke Centers to provide stroke victims with treatments that ensure complete recovery. Over the years, Chuck has been recognized for helping develop both for profit and not-for-profit organizations, receiving the 2004 Distinguished Leadership Award from the Boy Scout Council of Santa Clara County. He has served on the boards of the Chamber of Commerce, San Jose Water, and Heritage Commerce Corp. He has actively volunteered for Notre Dame University, Symphony Silicon Valley, Downtown San Jose Rotary, O'Connor Hospital, Valley Medical Foundation, and Children's Discovery Museum.

It's been Silicon Valley's stroke of good fortune to have Chuck Toeniskoetter as a 2005 JA Laureate.
