2006 Laureates, Charmaine and Dan Warmenhoven cover the worlds of art, science, education and business. A graduate of Princeton and Columbia universities. Ms. Warmenhoven began her career as a special education teacher. She also has developed and supported parish-based religious education programs for inclusion of children with disabilities. As associate director of special ministries for the Diocese of San Jose, she directed the Deaf Ministry program and provided sign language instruction for deaf children and adults. She also developed and supported parish-based pastoral ministry programs, providing training for ministers to the sick. Ms. Warmenhoven also has been an active supporter of the arts. She has served on the boards of Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley and Villa Montalvo Center for the Arts. At the ballet, she chaired and developed the business plan, solicited funding and started the Ballet San Jose School for professional and community ballet training in 1996. At Villa Montalvo, she chaired the Education and Outreach Committee. Dan Warmenhoven is well known in Silicon Valley as the Chief Executive Officer of Network Appliance Inc. Under his leadership, Network Appliance has grown to become a billion-dollar company and is now recognized as the market leader in network storage — a concept that the company pioneered. Mr. Warmenhoven joined Network Appliance in 1994 and led the company's initial public offering in 1995. Today, Network Appliance has over 2600 employees worldwide with distribution channels in over 100 countries. Network Appliance is included in both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 indices, and has been ranked as one of Fortune Magazine's 100 best companies to work for in America for the past two years. In 2001, Business Week named Mr. Warmenhoven as one of its Top 25 Managers for the Year. Mr. Warmenhoven was also selected by Ernst & Young as a recipient in that company's Entrepreneur of the Year awards program for the e-business category. Previously, he served as chairman, president and CEO of Network Equipment Technologies, a telecommunications manufacturer. He is a veteran of Hewlett-Packard Co., where he held senior management positions including general manager of the Information Networks Group. Prior to HP, Mr. Warmenhoven was a 13-year veteran of IBM Corp. in the Communications Products Division, including engineering manager for the token-ring local area network. He holds a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering, with honors, from Princeton University.
