Yvette del Prado, PH.D., has served as vice president of External
Affairs with SGI (Silicon Graphics, Inc.) for five years. She was in
charge of federal and state government relations, corporate
contributions, and community and education relations. Yvette is
planning to “retire” in July, 2000 to spend more time with her family,
and pursue her other passions in life, of which there are many…most
of which involve children and the community.
Prior to joining Silicon Graphics, Dr. del Prado was vice president of
Human Resources, Education and Public Affairs for Tandem
Computers Incorporated. In that capacity, she oversaw all human
resources functions, and the company’s internal and customer
education programs. She was also responsible for Tandem’s
interface with key federal, state and local regulatory, legislative and
community organizations. She joined the company in 1990 and led a
staff of 400 employees worldwide.
Earlier, Dr. del Prado served as Superintendent of Schools for the
Cupertino School District and as Associate Superintendent of
Schools for the San Francisco School District. From 1983 to 1990,
she led the Cupertino School District to a nationally recognized model
of public education. The District was ranked in the top 3 percent in
the State and honored nationally as an outstanding school system.
A career California educator, Dr. del Prado spent her early
professional years in the Los Angeles and Pasadena school districts
as a teacher, school site and central office administrator. As a
consultant in foreign language and educational television, she has
produced, directed and taught television lessons reaching more than
one million students, as well as several series of teacher inservice
programs distributed nationally. She is also the author of more than
one dozen publications.
Throughout her career, Dr. del Prado has been recognized as a
visionary executive and leader who can gain the support of multiple
constituencies in achieving key goals. She enjoys tackling tough
assignments and moving organizations forward to benchmark
leadership positions.
Dr. del Prado’s professional appointments include serving as Chair
of the State Elementary Grades Task Force and membership on the
Sate Superintendent’s Advisory Committee, the state Middle Grades
Task Force, the District Effectiveness Task Force, the Child Care
and School Readiness Task Force, the State Superintendent’s
Advisory Committee on College Preparation of Underrepresented
Minority Students, the State Committee on School Operations
Improvement, and the Associate of California School
Administrator’s State Superintendency Committee.
Among her other professional and public services commitments, Dr.
del Prado served as President of the Cupertino Chamber of
Commerce. Earlier, she served as Vice President for Business
Development and in other roles as Director of the Chamber. As
District Chairperson for the Santa Clara County Council of Boy
Scouts, she directed the scouting activities of more than two thousand
youths. She previously served as a Commissioner on Bay Visions
2020 and on the KNTV-11 Hispanic Advisory Board, as well as on
the Board of Directors of Cogswell College and San Jose Sports
Authority. In addition, she served on the Board of Trustees of the
United Way of Santa Clara County, the World Affairs Council and
remains active in the volunteer community. She served on the Boards
of both Joint Venture Silicon Valley and Smart Valley, before leaving
to focus on her corporate responsibilities. She is a Board Member
and Immediate Past Chair of the Tech Museum of Innovation.
She received the TWIN Award from YWCA in 1997 for her
outstanding contributions s a woman in the technology field. The
BRITE Award was created in honor of Dr. del Prado in 1998 which
focuses on the Breakthrough Results Integrating Technology and
Education. The award is annual and is sponsored by SGI and the
Tech Museum of Innovation.
In March 1996, Dr. del Prado was presented the National Hispanic
Employee Association’s Breaking Barriers Award. In 1993, she was
recognized by San Jose Mayor Susan Hammer as one of the
Outstanding Women of Silicon Valley. During National Hispanic
Week in 1992, Dr. del Prado was awarded KGO-TV’s Profiles of
Excellence. In 1991, she was appointed to the President’s Advisory
Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans, and
was also honored with the Women of Vision Award by the Career
Action Center of Palo Alto. In 1990, she received the National
Hispanic Heritage Award from the Hispanic Development
Corporation, the San Jose Mercury News and KNTV-11. Dr. del
Prado was named the 1989-90 Claremont Graduate School
Distinguished Alumna Award, and the 1989-90 Helen Heffernan
Memorial Curriculum Award. In 1989, she was named Cupertino’s
Citizen of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce. For her
contributions to the provision of child care services, Dr. del Prado
was presented the 1989 City of San Jose “In Celebration of
Children” Award. In 1989, she was also awarded the Women of
Achievement Award in Education by the Santa Clara County
Womens’ Fund and the San Jose Mercury News, the DeAnza
Charter Association of California School Administrators Award for
Outstanding Leadership for children. In recognition of exemplary
service and dedication to the people of California, Dr. del Prado
received the 1989 Woman of the Year by the California State
Legislature. In 1986, she received the Santa Clara County Women
Leaders in Education Award as the Outstanding Woman School
Administrator. She was also awarded the Cupertino Chamber of
commerce President’s Award for Outstanding Service and the City
of Cupertino Civic Service Award.
