At the February 19, 2003 board meeting, Junior Achievement Board of Directors approved nine additions, representing new connections across business, education, and community, and raising the total to over thirty board members. This broader representation truly enables Junior Achievement to teach young people the principles of free enterprise so that they understand business and economics, are workforce-ready, and are prepared to be successful, contributing citizens in our community.
New Education and Community Members:
Manny Barbara, Superintendent of Oak Grove School District
Christina Espinosa-Pieb, Academic Services Dean, De Anza College
Mark Linsky, AYSO South Bay Commissioner and Saratoga schools activist
New Business Members:
Patrick Boudreau, Principal at PVB Associates
Jeff Boyle, Managing Partner in Northern California, Cap Gemini Ernst & Young
Raquel Gonzalez, Market President, Silicon Valley, Bank of America
Scott Grasinger, Regional Vice PresidentSBC Global Markets, SBC Communications
Wendy Perez, Tax Partner, Ernst & Young LLP
Kathy Tyra, Vice President of Operations, Aspect Communications
Junior Achievement of Silicon Valley & Monterey Bay has already been active in the Oak Grove School District in San Jose, but now with Superintendents from Berryessa and San Jose Unified, JA classroom programs should become more pervasive across San Jose schools. A new relationship with De Anza College could allow college students to become involved as role-model volunteers teaching younger Junior Achievement students. And our new connection to Saratoga schools and AYSO soccer players and families could help establish a stronger foothold in the schools from Saratoga to Watsonville.
Business board members add value to Junior Achievement in different ways. New board members from companies like SBC Communications and Bank of America will deepen the relationships with these corporations who already provide volunteers and funding as well as participate in JA special events. New partnerships with companies such as Aspect Communications, Cap Gemini, and Ernst & Young will open doors for Junior Achievement.
According to Board Chair, Jamie Van De Ven, "We are thrilled to add these representatives from such diverse industries and communities. New board members always bring new energy to our activities. They will really help us kickoff our 50th Anniversary celebration in Silicon Valley this year."
Junior Achievement of Silicon Valley & Monterey Bay is the premier K - 12 economic education organization. Globally, Junior Achievement is the largest and fastest-growing nonprofit economic education organization, annually teaching 6 million elementary, middle school and high school students in over 110 countries. Junior Achievement's mission is to ensure that every child in America has a fundamental understanding of the free enterprise system. Since 1953, Junior Achievement has partnered with businesses, communities and schools from Silicon Valley to Monterey Bay to teach young people the principles of free enterprise so that they understand business and economics and are workforce-ready. Only Junior Achievement teaches K - 12th grade students about the relevance of school to their future success by using community and business role models to bring our classroom programs to life. In multiple classroom visits, these volunteers use their experience and knowledge to help students become workforce-ready by applying critical thinking and school skills to solving real-world problems. As a result, approximately 27,500 children from this past year will impact Silicon Valley and Monterey Bay communities as successful individuals, workers and consumers.
